Bioprocess Fermentation Plant Manager 

CuanTec Ltd is an innovative small company who has perfected a biological method of extracting ultra-pure chitin from shellfish waste out of the fishing industry, CuanTec are utilising that ultra-pure chitin for a variety of high value products in development.

Following a significant new investment, CuanTec are building its first commercial-scale biobased extraction facility on a site is to be opened later this year in Glenrothes, Scotland.

We require a Bioprocess Fermentation Plant Manager to oversee the safe commissioning and operation of this facility and become part of the senior management team shaping and delivering the future success of the business. Our process also requires the chemical conversion of the extracted biomaterials. 

The ideal candidate will have at least 6 years of experience managing a fermentation and chemical processing facility either as a continuous or a batch process, process scale up, both fermentation and downstream processing/purification with a track record of achievements covering high quality, efficient and safe manufacturing. The candidate must also be well versed with safe management of hazardous chemicals used in a process.


A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science discipline is required such as chemical engineering, fermentation science, physical or biochemical sciences. 


Expertise gained from designing, commissioning, and running a fermentation, pharma or food manufacturing facility to GMP standard and implementing full operational work practices are essential. Familiarity with pressure vessels, filtration, pumps, valves, control systems with a willingness to be hands-on at the early stages of plant commissioning are pre-requisites. 


IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications, ILM accreditations and formal training in kaizen, six-sigma and Kepner will be distinctly advantageous. 


Key Accountabilities also include:

  • Management of departmental staff and plant resources 

  • Working closely with the science teams on continuous improvements for new processes using technical capabilities to identify opportunities to improve yields, optimise processes and the development of new products.

  • Setting clear production targets and reporting daily, weekly, monthly performance metrics including conformity of the plant processes against regulatory requirements. 

  • Troubleshoot plant issues and find long-lasting solutions.

  • Leading and inspiring the team to deliver operational excellence, championing a learning and development culture to drive performance and capability, and setting high safety standards and culture.


This is the first role to be filled within the operations side of our business and the successful candidate will lead the recruitment of the rest of the team at the new facility needed to deliver our ambitions. The new Plant Manager is expected to grow with the business and significantly lead and influence its future manufacturing footprint.  


The role will be based at CuanTec’s new extraction facility being built in Glenrothes. The remuneration package will be competitive, including pension, and will reflect the level of expertise of the successful candidate.
